On May 19, 2018, Corvallis held its 2nd Annual JDRF One Walk for Type 1 Diabetes. Christine Snow was the amazing woman who started this effort in 2016 and made another successful walk possible this year. I asked her for an interview to share with you. Here is her story:
Linnea: What is your connection to Type 1 Diabetes?
Christine: My son, Jackson, was diagnosed with Type 1 in 1996, when he was 9 years old. I learned about JDRF in 2003 and was inspired by this organization, since it was started by parents with it’s one goal, to cure Type 1 Diabetes. After learning how committed JDRF was to funding Type 1 research, I became involved by going to the Portland walks and galas. For a short time, I was on the Board of the Oregon/SW Washington chapter.
The challenges of having Type 1 are many and the fears of complications from glucose fluctuations are very real. Two years ago, Jackson had laser surgery to save his vision. Watching him go through this challenge was my primary motivation for wanting to start a walk in Corvallis. It was at that time, in 2016, that I contacted the JDRF about starting a walk in Corvallis. There was little awareness in our community about Type 1 and I believed we could bring the T1D community together to support each other and raise money for Type 1 research.
The first thing I did was find a great committee, willing to put in the time to make it happen. We started over a year before the first walk and that made a huge difference in terms of promotion. I’ve lived in Corvallis almost 30 years and was a professor at Oregon State University. I began talking to my friends in the business and OSU community and getting the word out to anyone and everyone I knew. We created fliers, ran ads in the paper and talked it up as much as possible. It worked! The first year, 2017, we had 400 walkers register and raised over $70,000. This year, we had more than 400 walkers at the event and have also raised more than $70,000 so far and hope for more donations. It feels really good to see that the type 1 community has an avenue for coming together and raising money to turn Type 1 into Type None.
The cure for Type 1 Diabetes will be reached with support from amazing women like Christine and the Corvallis community. To connect with JDRF or the Corvallis Walk, check out their websites by clicking the hyperlinks.
Until next time!
