Spring is Here!
The cold winds have finally receded, the snows are in full hibernation, and spring has awakened around (most of) the United States. With the arrival of spring comes my favorite time of year – farmer’s market season. I was fortunate enough to secure a market staff position with Denison Farms of Corvallis, Oregon last year. I am blessed to be able to participate again this season. Wednesday’s have become my favorite day of the week.
Farmer’s Market Culture
No one could have prepared me for farmer’s market culture. It’s a gratifying experience seeing local business owners share their knowledge and sell their wares to customers with sincerity. At the Wednesday Salem Market, there are a select number of vendors, but everyone has their own story to tell and the variety is impressive. When I started last June, Denison Farms introduced me to the wonderful world of trading. Like any kid in school, I was taught how ancient civilizations traded products for products. When I got a little older, I experienced bartering in China while my family was on holiday. Being able to trade and negotiate for items is thrilling and satisfying. I honestly wish our American culture would adopt it more. Have you ever traded for something?
Benefits of Whole Vegetables
I have noticed over the years that my food preferences change in stages. There have been years where I craved a Big Mac meal and recently, I have thought that I could be a full blown vegetarian if I wanted to. Whole foods from the market have been a blessing, and my blood sugars definitely appreciate it. During the summer, there is definitely more variety in foods and recipe experimentation is a welcome hobby for me. What recipes do you like to make in the summer time? I am going to try my hand at the hot and sour greens recipe pictured below (courtesy of Elizabeth Kerle of Denison Farms, Corvallis).
