Diabetes and Pregnancy Update
What a week it’s turning out to be! Diabetes and pregnancy are two tough things on their own. But combine them and you have a roller coaster ride to buckle up on. I wanted to give everyone an update on how things are going in Week 13.
My little bundle is currently the size of a peach! My energy level has finally returned back to normal, and I am so thankful to be in the second trimester. Another great thing about this week is only one doctor’s appointment. Check in with me at the end of this week for an update from my endocrinology visit.

Blood Sugar Levels
Honestly, my blood sugars have been giving me some puzzlement this past week. The obstetrician let us know that further along in the pregnancy, the placenta will be releasing more hormones. These hormones will make my body more insulin resistant. I feel like that resistance is already beginning. I’ve noticed that my insulin dosing for food has not been enough to cover my post meal time blood sugars. Especially when my pregnancy snack monster comes out to play, and I want a chocolate covered Entenmann’s donuts….dosing myself for 1 donut means bolus-ing for 32g (carb info on the nutrition label). That amount of insulin that worked before is not covering me now. I am very curious to see how much my insulin to carb ratio will be adjusted on Friday.

Spring Time Joys
In other news, spring has finally come! That means more outdoor activities, more sunshine after work, and the start of farmer’s market season! My goals to help my blood sugar stay more in control during this changing time is to take Maximus and Vixen on more walks. The Salem Saturday Market began at the beginning of April, so I will try my hand at bringing these gentle giants to those events too. Who doesn’t like a farmer’s market? What do you like to buy at your local farmer’s market?

Because of my pregnancy snack monster not getting along with my diabetes, I decided to opt for healthier snacks. This post made my day! I tried out the Nutella fruit dip with delight last night. The recipe’s portion size seemed a bit big, so I halved it and dosed for 62g carbs total for my after dinner snack (Nutella dip + medium apple). Honestly, 62g is high for a snack, so next time I think I will quarter the recipe and eat only half an apple. But the dip satisfied my sweet tooth fully! There are also recipes for chia pudding, choco-nut popcorn, and banana ice cream that I plan on testing soon.
What is your favorite after dinner snack? Comment below!
Tune in later this week for my endocrinology visit update. Until next time, addio!
P.S. History of Nutella!
